ITEM WRITER

ABOUT THE JOB
ALTA Language Services seeks a talented individual to join our Testing Department on a contract basis to develop and review multiple-choice assessment items in English. The Item Writer will be expected to deliver high-quality content that meets client specifications, within a specific deadline and timeline. Paid orientation regarding the specifics of the development will be provided upon hire.
The right candidate for this position is someone who has extensive experience with multiple-choice item writing. Experience writing items for language proficiency assessments, or for a U.S. Government client is a huge plus.
Hours for this contract job will vary by week. The Project Managers will inform the Item Writer of the schedule for each phase of the project, so that the Item Writer can plan ahead. The workload varies from week to week – some weeks may be 10 hours, others may be up to 30 hours. The current phase of the contract is from now through June 2023.
1. Develop multiple-choice items in English, as per development specifications provided by ALTA Project Managers.
2. Review and adjust multiple-choice items written by linguists for whom English is not the first language.
3. Follow project life cycle; ensure that any problems are addressed, escalated when needed, and resolved quickly.
SKILLS
Native user of the English language.
Professional-level writing skills in English.
Test development experience, to include proficiency with writing assessment material, specifically multiple-choice items
Excellent critical reading skills in English.
Proficiency with the use of style guides.
Ability to navigate a content management system (CMS).
Ability and desire to work collaboratively.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Professionalism.
Research skills.
Must have email access with the capability to send and receive attached files, and must be able to navigate the Internet.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Degree: College degree preferred.
Computer Knowledge: Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Languages: English fluency required.
EXPERIENCE
Previous experience in test item development, and specifically multiple-choice item development, is required. The Project Managers will have time to orient the Item Writer on specifications from the client, but will not have time to provide extensive training on multiple-choice item development techniques.
Experience using English in a professional capacity (writing, editing, translation, teaching, etc.), is required.
